PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD - Trinidad and Tobago’s Under-19 cricket team selected for the 2013 Regional Under-19 50 overs and Three-Day championships will be a very experienced one, with national opening batsman Jeremy Solozano leading the way.
Solozano is one of six players returning to the side from last year’s squad, which finished fifth in the 50-over competition behind winners Windward Islands, Guyana (second), Jamaica (third) and Barbados (fourth).
The left-handed opener scored 582 runs in the Three-Day tournament, with two centuries and three half centuries to finish as the competition’s leading batsman with an average of 90.33.
T&T placed third in the Three-Day competition behind winners Barbados and runners-up Guyana.
Solozano joins Vikash Mohan, Jovan Ali, Al Small, Andy Gobin and Brian Christmas as returning players, while last year’s Under-17 players Tion Webster, Camillo Carimbocas, Jesse Bootan, Bryan Charles, and Justin Joseph all made the step up to the Under-19 level this year.
Wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran—the leading gloveman in last year’s Under-19 tournament—would have been T&T’s first choice behind the stumps for this year’s youth tournament had he not been drafted into the Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 franchise team, T&T “Red Steel”. He was replaced by another hard-hitting batsman in Brandon Ramdial.
Vikash Mohan captained the team in 2012 and should be in line to lead T&T again in this year’s July 17-August 21 tournament in St Kitts.
