Softball Association to host day of finals

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – In an unprecedented move, the Antigua & Barbuda Softball Cricket Association (ABSCA) will host a day of finals at the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG), on Sunday, as it seeks to both encourage public support and give back to at least one charitable organisation.

Vincie Bowen, Floor Member of the softball association and chair of the finals organising committee, said all monies collected at the gates on Sunday will be donated to the Victory Center, a school for children of special needs.

Patrons visiting the ARG for the matches will pay $5 entrance fee, all of which will go towards the center. Three finals, according to Bowen, will be contested on Sunday.

“What we decided we would do is use the gate receipts that will go back to the Victory Center to assist them with their programmes and their day-to-day activities. The first game will be the Men’s Division A finals (the Caribbean Alliance 30 overs finals) between Lion Hill and the Caribbean Alliance Strictly Business team. The second game will be the St John’s Credit Union 25 overs finals between the Quality Boats Enforcer and also the Caribbean Alliance Strictly Business team and the third game will be between the Buckley’s 3 J’s and Sisserou,” he said.

Guy Yearwood Jr., representing the Victory Center, welcomes the initiative as the institution searches for a larger venue.

“We have 19 students right now but we are limited in our ability to take on more because of where we are. We are at the Hope Center which has been rented to us by the Mental Health Association. So it’s kind of a small place, but we are doing the best with what we have. We are hoping to get a bigger building so that we can invite more students to come along,” he said.

The opening match on Sunday is scheduled to bowl off at 11 am.
