Smith on song as Bajans beat CCC

Cave Hill, Barbados -- Dwayne Smith played a typically entertaining half-century as Barbados started the UWI Cave Hill Campus T20 Cricket Festival with a hard-fought win over Combined Campuses and Colleges.

Smith, the powerful right-handed opener, smashed four sixes and three fours in 53 off 30 balls as the Bajans won by three wickets at the 3Ws Oval on Tuesday night. He however fell to a slog sweep off Ryan Austin (2-29) as Barbados wobbled at 73-4.

Barbados ended on 120-7 off 17.3 overs, with keeper Shane Dowrich (15 not out) ending the match with a glorious boundary over extra cover. They made a strong reply to 119-7 off 20 overs made by CCC in the first half of the match.

Earlier in the innings, Ryan Hinds made a run-a-ball 15 but he fell to a slog to deep mid-on off Jason Holder (2-6), which opened the match. Next ball Alcindo Holder tried to hook Holder but the ball skied off the top edge and the bowler held a simple catch.

Earlier, in the night, Chadwick Walton (33) played well at the top of the innings while Ryan Wiggins (26) played some big shots at the end. The best bowler was off-spinner Ashley Nurse, who took 2-21, while Hinds chipped in with two wickets as well.

Barbados will face Trinidad and Tobago in the top-of-the-table clash on Wednesday at 8 pm.
