Smith keeps Windwards on top in Grenada

St George's, Grenada, CMC – A fluent half-century from the experienced Devon Smith on Saturday put the Windward Islands in a strong position to force a victory over Leeward Islands in their fifth round Regional Four-Day match.

The left-hander stroked an unbeaten 76 as the Windwards, batting a second time, reached 135 for four at the close on the second day, a lead of 256 runs.

Earlier, the Leewards finished on 171 for nine declared with Jahmar Hamilton unable to bat through injury. Resuming the day on 36 for one, wicketkeeper Devon Thomas top scored with 44, Orlando Peters hit 41, Tonito Willett, 27 and opener Kieran Powell, 26.

West Indies off-spinner Shane Shillingford followed up his 11-wicket haul in Jamaica last week by taking five for 60 while Kenroy Peters (2-19) and Nelon Pascal (2-36) finished with two apiece.

Powell and Peters kept the innings together with a second wicket stand of 63 before Peters and Thomas added another 50 for the third wicket.

With a lead of 121 runs secured, the Windwards then stretched their advantage further through an 83-run opening stand between Smith and the in-form Tyrone Theophile who scored 27.

Though they lost wickets late in the session, Smith continued unfazed, and has so far faced 124 balls in just under three hours at the crease, counting six fours.
