Six English teams for Bajan cricket tourney
BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS - Six English county sides – packed with international talent – will arrive in Barbados this week with aims of intensifying their pre-season preparations.
Derbyshire, Hampshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire and Yorkshire will all be participating in the 3rd Annual Barbados Pre-Season Pro Cricket Camp with $15,000 prize money at stake.
The March 15th to 25th tournament, which is organised by the Barbados Tourism Authority, incorporates The Barbados T20 Cup and The Barbados T20 Plate.
Local and regional hopes will rest with Barbados and the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC). Both teams will be contesting the tournament in between their own fixtures of the ongoing WICB regional four-day competition.
The Barbados T20 Cup, which will be day/night matches, is scheduled to get underway at Kensington Oval at 4p.m. on March 20th.
Warwickshire defeated Derbyshire in the final last year and have brought with them Chris Woakes, Darren Maddy and Tim Ambrose, all with international experience.
Hampshire, regular visitors to the Caribbean, won the inaugural event in 2010.
Hampshire skipper Jimmy Adams will lead a 14-man squad that includes youngsters Adam Rouse and Sean Terry, but is without Dimi Mascarenhas, the rested Danny Briggs, Neil McKenzie and overseas batsman Simon Katich.
Nottinghamshire have included all three of their off-season signings in James Taylor, Michael Lumb and Harry Gurney. Batting prospect Alex Hales, who recently played in India, Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates, has also made the trip.
Jonny Bairstow, a member of England’s successful ODI squad against Pakistan recently, is in a strong Yorkshire touring party which includes captain Andrew Gale, Ryan Sidebottom, Joe Root and Ajmal Shahzad.
Leicestershire, the current English T20 Champions, are hoping that their new overseas signing, discarded West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan, will be able to join them for some of their fixtures.
Sarwan, who was overlooked for the ODI leg of the forthcoming Australian tour to the Caribbean, plans to meet up with his new Foxes team-mates during a break from his current commitments with Guyana.
Kensington Oval will host the two days of the Twenty20 competition. The other tour matches for the visiting teams will take place around the island at the Windward, Carlton, Four Square, North Star and Wanderers Cricket Clubs. (AH)
