Shiv, Sarwan out for Jamaica clash
GEORGETOWN, GUYANA - Winning one of two crucial matches on Thursday against the Combined Campuses and Colleges, Guyana is facing another in order to book a semi-final spot in this year’s West Indies Cricket Board Regional Super50 tournament.
The Guyanese are currently on eight points and will play second placed team Jamaica on Sunday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence from 14:00h. However, their hopes of qualifying for the final four will also depend on the outcome of the Trinidad and Tobago/Barbados and the Leeward Islands/Windward Islands clashes.
Should Guyana triumph against Jamaica and should Barbados or the Windward Islands lose, the Guyanese will qualify for a semi-final spot.
Barbados, after five games, are tied with the CCC on 10 points while Windward Islands are on eight points after five games.
Trinidad and Tobago lead the points’ table with 21 points followed by Jamaica on 19 points. Leeward Islands are in the cellar position of four points.
In their previous Regional Super50 matches, Guyana defeated the Leeward Islands by five wickets in the first round but then suffered heavy defeats to Barbados, Windward Islands and Trinidad and Tobago before making amends against the CCC with a three-wicket win.
Head Coach Esaun Crandon in an invited comment on Friday said that if the players can perform the basics right and play their game without pressure they should win with ease on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Selectors, Rayon Griffith on Friday confirmed that Guyana will miss the services of West Indies batsmen Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul for the remainder of the season.
Both Sarwan and Chanderpaul will head to England to honour their contractual agreement with English County sides Leicestershire and Derbyshire respectively. Sarwan signed a three-year contract while Chanderpaul signed a two-year contract.
Selectors have drafted in Essequibo all-rounder Ricardo Adams and West Indies middle order batsman Assad Fudadin in the 13-man squad for tomorrow clash against Jamaica.
Guyana’s Super50 squad: Veerasammy Permaul (Captain), Trevon Griffith, Ricardo Adams, Leon Johnson, Assad Fudadin, Narsingh Deonarine, Anthony Bramble, Steven Jacobs, Devendra Bishoo, Ronsford Beaton, Paul Wintz, Rajiv Ivan, and Zaheer Mohamed.
