PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD - Former Trinidad and Tobago Under-19 batsman Savion Lara is on a roll in England, having scored two half centuries and an unbeaten hundred in five matches for Purley Cricket Club in the Surrey Championship Division Two competition.
Lara’s scores have been progressively improving during his stint in England. The wicket-keeper batsman scored one in his first match, then narrowly missed out on a half century with 47, before hitting 70 in his team’s victory over Pyrford CC
He then added 76 in a loss to Chessington CC, and an unbeaten 129 in their win over Horsley & Send CC.
In five innings, he has scored 323 runs at an average of 80.75 with one not out, and has accounted for more than 30 per cent of his team’s runs so far this season.
Lara, who plays club cricket with Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC), was selected to travel to England to train with County side Somerset as part of a scholarship programme for up and coming Parkite players started by Queen’s Park’s international batting star Kieron Pollard last year.
The first person to benefit from the programme was former West Indies all-rounder Akeal Hosein, who was selected last year and went on to make his first class debut for T&T in their historic three-wicket win over Jamaica in the Regional Four-Say Championship semi-final at Sabina Park, Jamaica in May.
Hosein also played in the Four-Day final against Barbados at Kensington Oval in Barbados when T&T lost by an innings and 22 runs.
Now Lara is getting a chance in the scholarship programme and so far has been doing well.
