Sammy wins St Lucia's top award

CASTRIES, St  Lucia, CMC - West Indies captain Darren Sammy has been named St. Lucia’s Senior Male Cricketer of 2011. The Female Cricketer of the Year award was won by national women’s vice-captain Swayline Williams.

Windward Islands Under-17 captain Larry Edward and Tara Louis captured the Junior Male and Female awards. Sammy had a year of mixed fortunes as West Indies captain, both at home and abroad.

He played 10 Test matches and took 30 wickets at 29 runs per wicket. He also made 325 runs including his maiden Test century against Bangladesh at Chittagong in October. He held 18 catches -- the most in Test cricket in 2011.

In Tests, West Indies won one series of two matches against Bangladesh in Bangladesh 1-0, drew 1-1 with Pakistan in the Caribbean in two matches, and lost twice to India. They were beaten 1-0 in three matches at home and 2-0 in another three-match rubber in India.

As far as One Day Internationals were concerned, West Indies won ten matches and lost 17. Their only series success was 2-1 against Bangladesh.
West Indies won two Twenty20 matches -- against Pakistan in St Lucia and against England at the Oval in London -- and lost three.
