Guyana Chronicle article.
GEORGETOWN, GUYANA - The cricket teams of Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, on Thursday last made a financial donation to National powerlifting champion Vijai Rahim.
The donation was made to Rahim to enable him to attend the 14th Pan American and 7th Caribbean Powerlifting Championships that would be held simultaneously from July 1 to 7, 2013 in Orlando, Florida.
It was done by the Rose Hall Town Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division teams, Pepsi Under-19 and Intermediate, Gizmos & Gadgets Under-21 and First Division and Metro Female teams.
The Club’s long-serving Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster in handing over the cheque for an undisclosed amount hailed the achievements of Rahim at the national and regional levels as a powerlifter and hailed him as a sporting hero and positive role model for youths in the ancient county.
Foster said the Club’s cricket teams were pleased to assist Rahim as they wanted every sportsperson in Berbice to fulfil his/her potentials and most importantly to be role models to youths as the club strives to promote the ‘No to Drugs and Yes to Education’ message.
He advised Rahim to always be disciplined and committed, while at the same time to remain grounded to his roots, adding that success does tend to change the personality of some sportsmen and this causes them to lose focus.
He wished Rahim all the success at the championships and expressed confidence that he would make Berbice and Guyana proud by winning his category and committed the Club to assist Rahim in the future as it has done in the past once he remains disciplined and focused.
Rahim expressed gratitude to the cricket teams of the Club and pledged that he would be successful and make everyone proud of him and while he noted that the competitions would be of the highest standard, he promised to give it his best shot.
