Reiffel to make “Test debut”

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua – Paul Reiffel will become the latest former international star to umpire in Tests, when he debuts in the two-match Digicel Test series between West Indies and New Zealand in the coming weeks.

The former Australia fast bowler will stand in both Tests of the series which take place from July 25 to 29 at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua and August 2 to 6 at Sabina Park in Jamaica.

He will be part of the International Cricket Council-appointed match management crew for the series that also includes former English County star Richard Kettleborough and South African Marais Erasmus.

Reiffel played 35 Tests, taking 104 wickets at 26.96 apiece, and 92 One-day Internationals, grabbing 106 scalps at 29.20 each, between 1992 and 1999.

The Victoria-born Reiffel, a member of the 1999 World Cup-winning Australia side, became the first former international star from Down Under to be elevated to the ICC international panel of umpires three years ago.

He has stood in 24 One-day Internationals and seven Twenty20 Internationals since his elevation.

Although this will be Reiffel’s first trip to the Caribbean as a match official, he previously visited the region 17 years ago.

Reiffel was part of Mark Taylor’s Australia side that beat West Indies, claiming the Frank Worrell Trophy, symbol of supremacy between the two sides, sparking the Aussies’ dominance of the international game for more than a decade.

Other former Test stars that have umpired Tests include England’s Peter Willey, Srinivasa Venkataraghavan of India, and current ICC Elite Panel umpire Sri Lanka’s Kumar Dharmasena.
