Rainbow Cup T20 reaches climax

Port of Spain, Trinidad - The inaugural Rainbow Cup Twenty20 Under-17 tournament bowled off last week Friday at Pierre Road Recreation Ground in Charlieville with Youngstars defeating Esmeralda by seven wickets.

After the first ball was bowled by Councillor for Charlieville, Faiq Mohammed, to Chairman of the Central Zone, Mozack Rahamut, the cricketers took to the field for battle with Esmeralda taking first strike. They reached 117 for eight off their 20 overs having been 80 for one after 12 overs.

Mattias Phillip, opening the batting for Esmeralda, hit 37 and was supported by national under 17 batsmen Brandon Maharaj and Dejourn Charles, who made 21 and 18, respectively.

Former national under 15 captain Shatroghan Rambaran was the best bowler for Youngstars, taking four wickets for 28 runs from four overs and was well supported by national under 17 all-rounder Sachin Seecharan who grabbed two wickets for eight runs.

Youngstars got to their target off 16.5 overs with a 70 run partnership between national under 17 batsman Keegan Simmons (38) and the Youngstars captain and national under 17 bowler Emillo Gopaul (55 not out) setting up the victory. Despite the loss in the opening match, Esmeralda bounced back to secure their place alongside Preysal in the final, which took place last night at Pierre Road.
