Rain wrecks final round of Windwards tournament

CASTRIES, S Lucia – Unbeaten hosts St Lucia were officially declared winners as rain disappointingly had the final say in both final round matches of the Windward Islands Under-15 Championship here Monday.

At the Mindoo Philip Park, the contest between St Lucia and Grenada finished in a no-decision while the other game at the Dennery Playing Field between dethroned champions Dominica and St Vincent and the Grenadines, was abandoned without a ball bowled.

Winning the toss and batting, St Lucia reached 96 for five when the innings was curtailed by rain after 39 overs. Left handed captain Johnnel Eugene top scored with an undefeated 35.

Jeron Noel picked up two wickets for 10 runs and Johann Jeremiah claimed two for 22.

In reply, Grenada reached 33 for three off 12 overs when afternoon showers prevented any further play. No batsman reahced double figures. Eugene took all three wickets to fall for seven runs with his off-spin.

The result meant St Lucia ended the double round robin contest with 11 points, with Dominica second with seven points, Grenada third with five and SVG fourth with one point.

Next year's tournament is scheduled for Dominica.
