Plipdeco hold off PowerGen in SIS cricket
Trinidad & Tobago Newsday article.
Port of Spain, Trinidad - Plipdeco enhanced their chances of repeating their 2013 success by holding on to an 11-run victory over PowerGen as the SIS Industrial Cricket League continued at Plipdeco Grounds, Point Lisas, on Monday.
The eventual victors won the toss and opted to bat first, but were set back by a quality opening bowling spell from Jamal Francis who claimed 3 for 13 in his two overs and Ramnarine Nowrang, who ended with figures of 1 for eight. Francis removed the dangerous Antonio Aziz for just one run in the first over of the match and his opening partner Leslie Sammy also fell for the same total in the very next over at the hands of Nowrang.
Plipdeco were reduced to 27/4 in the fifth over before Kwesi Griffith (22) and Kenya Leacock (12) came together for a valuable 20-run partnership. Griffith was the more aggressive of the pair, dominating most of the proceedings as he cleared the ropes with two massive sixes to give Plipdeco the impetus needed to finish on a respectable 66/7 after 10 overs.
In reply, PowerGen would have fancied their chances of chasing 67 for victory but Griffith once again set the momentum for the home team. His opening spell of two overs for two runs with a wicket, set the tone for the innings as PowerGen struggled to rotate the strike and find the boundaries needed to propel their run chase.
After five overs, PowerGen had only scored 16 runs with one wicket down and felt the immense pressure being applied by the very disciplined Plipdeco bowling attack.
Kerron Maingot played a good hand to top score with 20 but his teammates consumed too many deliveries and could not provide the support needed to threaten Plipdeco’s growing advantage.
Sixteen runs were needed off the last over but it never came. PowerGen fell short by 11 runs, closing on 55/5 off their allotted 10 overs.
Plipdeco are now tied for leaders of Group A with IPSL’s AUM division on 10 points each and are guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals as the final group matches take place over the next week.
