Pereira to lead GT&T Berbice in GCB/GTM Under-19 tourney

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA - National Under-19 skipper Shawn Pereira has been entrusted with the captaincy role by the Leslie Solomon-chaired Junior Selection Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), to lead the Ancient County team in this year’s Guyana Cricket Board/GTM Under-19 tournament.

Pereira will have as his deputy, Albion Cricket Club and national Under-19 left-arm orthodox spinner Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, while at their disposal will be Shimron Hetmyer, Sharaz Ramcharran, Romario Shepherd-De Jonge, David Latchaya and Shailendra Shameer, who all have vast experience at this and first division level in Berbice.

Notable absentee from the 14-man squad are Arif Chan, Nicholas Cameron and Karamchand Ramnarine who were all placed in the standby list while hard-working fast bowler Grisean Grant has not found favour with the selectors.

Four teams, namely GT&T Berbice, Demerara, Essequibo and a President’s XI will do battle in this year’s competition which will be played in a three-day and one-day format and bowls off tomorrow, with two matches in the day phase.

At the Wales Community Centre ground, Essequibo whose lineup includes Caribbean T20 selectee Ricardo Adams and the fast-rising fast bowler Kemo Paul, will take on a Demerara lineup that includes Andrew Gibson, Brian Sattaur, Kemal Savory, Dexter George and Devon Lord, just to name a few.

At the Everest Cricket Club ground, GT&T Berbice and the President’s XI will do battle, with both matches commencing at 09:30hrs, weather permitting.

The 14-man squad reads: Shawn Pereira, Devin Baldeo, Derick Narine, Shimron Hetmyer, David Latchaya, Sharaz Ramcharran, Kevon Jawalier, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, Aksay Homraj, Parmanand Narine, Shailendra Shameer, Romario Shepherd-De Jonge, Nick Ramsaroop and Suresh Dhanai.

The seven standby players are: Arif Chan, Hakeem Hinds, Avinash Wajid, Nicholas Cameron,   Dillon Joseph, Karamchand Ramnarine and Avinash Sewkarran.
