New Winthorpes win opening ICCL match

ST JOHN’S, Antigua - Defending champions in the Seventh Day Adventist Inter-Church Cricket League (ICCL), New Winthorpes, got off to a winning start when the competition bowled off on Saturday night at Powell’s Playing Field.
Playing in the tournament’s opening match, New Winthorpes defeated Clare Hall by six wickets as they sent a warning to the rest of the teams that they intend to aggressively defend their title.
Batting first, New Winthorpes reached 61 for four in their allotted 20 overs. There were no scorers of note for the defending champions.
Clare Hall, in reply, reached 57 for eight before their 20 overs elapsed. Deron Lee top-scored with 17 in the losing effort.
Glentis Martin took four wickets for 10 runs to secure victory for New Winthropes.
In the opening ceremony, which preceded the match, New Winthorpes received the Challenge Trophy and a replica for winning the 2012 title. Replicas were also presented to St John’s, the 2011 champions, and Tindall, the 2009/2010 champions.
Last year’s MVP was Al Burton who scored the highest aggregate of runs with 212 and also took four wickets. Burton, who secured the MVP award for the fourth successive year, also received the prize for the highest individual score for his 74 against Villa.
Two New Winthorpes players Casmore Trudge who bagged a total of 10 wickets for 38 runs last year and Russel James who had best figures of four for one, in a wining cause against Seaglans, were also rewarded for their performances.
Team medals went to runners-up New Maranatha, while Orion of Liberta received the third place medals.
The competition will continue on Saturday at Powell’s where St John’s take on Bolans at 7:30 pm and Bethesda play Villa in the feature contest. Also, three matches will be played daily for the Carnival weekend starting at 4 pm on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, all at Powell’s.
