PROVIDENCE, Guyana, CMC – Half-centuries from Jason Mohammed and Justin Guillen propelled Trinidad & Tobago into the Final of the Regional Super50 tournament, following a four-wicket victory over hosts Guyana on Wednesday.

The diminutive Mohammed led the way with an unbeaten 65 that earned him the Man-of-the-Match award and Guillen supported with 63, allowing T&T to successfully chase 201 for victory in the first semi-final at the Guyana National Stadium.

Mohammed hit four fours and one six from 74 balls, adding a crucial 56 for the sixth wicket with Rayad Emrit to put T&T back on track, after the left-handed Guillen had struck seven fours from 90 balls to give early momentum to the innings before his departure left the visitors at the crossroads.

Kevon Cooper formalised the result for the Red Force, when he pulled a short, badly-lined delivery from off-spinner Royston Crandon through backward square leg for four with 23 deliveries remaining.

The result meant that the T&T advance to the Final, where they will face the winner of the second semi-final between Jamaica and West Indies High Performance Centre on Thursday at the same venue.

Emrit had snared four wickets for 39 runs from nine overs, topping Leon Johnson’s 66, as the visitors restricted the Guyanese to 200 for nine from their allocation of 50 overs in the rain-affected match.

T&T then suffered an immediate setback when they started their chase, when off-spinner Steven Jacobs trapped opener Williams Perkins lbw for a six-ball duck in the very first over.

Daren Ganga came to the crease, but it was Guillen that got the Red Force moving in the right direction, batting with crisp assurance to add 47 for the second wicket with his captain.

Ganga however, was bowled for eight in the 15th over, when he played on to Jacobs, leading to a period when the home team’s bowlers gained a measure of control.

Dwayne Bravo was caught at slip for eight off Crandon four overs later, but T&T stumbled, when Guillen gifted his wicket to Crandon, skying a delivery to deep mid-wicket in the 27th over, and Sherwin Ganga was caught at mid-on off Paul Wintz in the following over, leaving the visitors 106 for fix.

Emrit came to the crease and stuck around long enough to take the wind out of Guyana’s sails before he was run out for 17 in the 42nd over, failing to beat Jacobs’ throw from fine leg to the bowler.

Earlier, Emrit set Guyana back with the ball, when he scalped opener Trevon Griffith caught at backward point for 12 in the eighth over, leaving them 22 for two.

Emrit returned to remove Christopher Barnwell for 21, Royston Crandon for 23, and Derwin Christian for six “at the death”, when the hosts looked set to launch a late charge.

Johnson struck five fours and two sixes from 107 balls and added 81 for the fourth wicket with Steven Jacobs in the most significant partnership of the innings before top-edged a sweep, giving Sherwin Ganga a return catch in the 28th over.

Ganga finished with two for 48 from 11 overs, and Sunil Narine ended with two for 26 from 12 overs.
