Merry Boys, PowerGen top groups in Premier T20
Trinidad Express article.
Port of Spain, Trinidad - Twin tons for Queen’s Park Cricket Club batsmen, captain Justin Guillen and Darren Bravo, provided an easy 118-run whipping of Munroe Road Cricket Club yesterday at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain as they cemented second spot in Group A of the Premier Division T20 in the final group stage round.
But Merry Boys remained the only unbeaten team of the tournament with a regulation victory over Alescon Comets to finish atop the group.
At the Oval, the hosts posted 234 for one in their allotted 20 overs as Bravo and Guillen shared a 225-run opening stand that was only broken two balls into the final over when the latter was run out by Shaquille Allick for 101. By then, Guillen had ransacked seven fours and as many sixes in 68 minutes at the crease. He faced 58 balls, failing to score off just 18 of those.
Bravo faced 13 more dot balls for his unbeaten 103, but matched Guillen with seven sixes and pummelled nine fours for good measure to help give his fellow Queen’s Park batsmen an easy day. He faced 67 balls in 71 minutes. The other batsman, Marlon Barclay, did not take strike.
The bowlers still had their jobs to do and that they did, with Tion Webster grabbing three wickets for 28 runs—including that of the joint topscorer Shaquille Allick (33, 29 balls)—as Munroe Road folded for 116.
Amit Jaggernauth assisted ably with two scalps of his own, getting Kapil Harry (33 off 22) after his cameo. Bravo would not be outdone, getting in on the action with three catches as well, and a wicket off the two balls in the final over.
For Merry Boys it was just a regular day out at Pierre Road. They restricted Alescon Comets to 109 for six, and then strolled to 112 for five in 16.3 overs on the back of Jitendra Sookdeo’s 51.
Bamboo Sports had the biggest win of the day, also in Group A, dismissing Moosai Sports for 86 after making 219 to earn a 133-run triumph.
PowerGen topped Group B with a comfortable five-wicket victory over Clarke Road despite Yannick Ottley’s unbeaten 55 for the 50-over champs. T&T captain Denesh Ramdin (33) and fellow national batsman Jason Mohammed (26) led the PowerGen reply.
Caldrac Sports also had a chance to sneak into first with a big victory, but they were hammered by six wickets with six overs to spare as Esmeralda ended a successful chase at 157 for four at Esmeralda.
The other encounter in Group B saw Jenexcon Tableland beat CLICO Preysal at Inshan Ali Park, Preysal, by four wickets.
