Mahmudullah praises Narine after 3rd ODI
DHAKA, BANGLADESH - Mahmudullah, the Bangladesh all-rounder, is all praise for Sunil Narine after losing the third One day International (ODI) of the five-match series at Mirpur, and said that the mystery spinner bowled beautifully on a pitch which was helping the slow bowlers.
The home team won the initial two matches of the series and looked a much better side in all three departments of the game. West Indies however, bounced back in the third ODI and won the match by four wickets.
Having won the toss, Darren Sammy opted to bowl first, which did not turn out to be the right decision as the hosts were off to a flying start through Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque. Narine however, proved his class as a world-class operator, dismissing both the openers early in his spell.
The cricketer from Trinidad & Tobago picked up four wickets after giving away just 37 runs in his 10 overs, helping his side bowl out the opposition for merely 227 runs in the last over of the innings.
Mahmudullah, who scored a half-century in the Bangladesh innings, feels that Narine bowled some wrong ones in the match but the all-rounder is surprised that the 24-year-old cricketer did not use that variation in the Test series.
“I think he didn't use his wrong one, the mystery delivery, in the Tests,” Mahmudullah said after Bangladesh's loss. “He started using it in the one-dayers in Khulna, and that too effectively.”
Narine came to Bangladesh with a lot of expectations but the right-arm spinner failed to make an impression in the Test series, picking up just three wickets. However, the youngster feels more comfortable in the shorter formats of the game, which is proved by his performance at Mirpur.
Mahmudullah expressed that the pitch was heavily in favour of the spinners and hopes that his batsmen will do a better job in the remaining matches of the series.
“The pace [of Narine's deliveries] was quite good and the pitch today was a bit difficult, so the ball was gripping. He bowled well, perhaps got a bit of assistance from the wicket too. We will try to pick him better next time, watch his videos a little more,” he added.
