Low scores as Women's Super50 bowls off

Roseau, Dominica - The Regional Women's Super50 bowled off across Dominica yesterday with matches in both Group A and Group B taking place in four venues on the island.

The highlight of the day was the low scores in all of the matches that got the tournament going. Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago registered victories in Group A, while St Vincent and the Grenadines and Guyana won in Group B.

GROUP A - BARBADOS v DOMINICA AT WINDSOR PARK: After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Barbados demolished hosts, Dominica, in less than half-day, skittling out their opponents for just 52 in 20.3 overs. There were five ducks in the Dominican innings which saw just one batter getting into double figures.

Tiffany Graham top scored with 12 while Talima Ismael had the second highest score of seven. Leading the destruction for the Bajans was Shamilia Connell, who spear-headed the attack. The pacer finished with figures of 6-31 from her 10 overs.

In return, Barbados romped to their target in 7.4 overs with opener, Hayley Matthews, hitting an aggressive 36 from 28 balls. Her knock included four boundaries. Barbados lost just two wickets along the way, getting to 54/2 to complete an eight-wicket win.

GROUP A T&T v GRENADA AT GENEVA PLAYING FIELD: A five-wicket haul from Stephanie Ramcharan blew away Grenada as Trinidad and Tobago kicked off their 2014 Regional Women's Super50 with a six-wicket victory over Grenada.

After opting to bowl first, Anisa Mohammed's side skittled out Grenada in less than 20 overs for just 36 runs. No batter on the Grenadian team got into double figures. Ramcharan finished with 5-20, only being able to complete seven overs. Gaitri Seetahal also chipped in with three wickets for one run.

The Trinis stumbled in their chase of such a small total, losing opener Britney Cooper without a run on the board. Stacy Ann King would prop up the Trinis though, stabilising the chase even as wickets fell around her. She would finish unbeaten on 13 as T&T got to 38/4 from 11.5 overs.

GROUP B GUYANA v JAMAICA AT BENJAMIN PARK: Guyana made up for a poor batting performance with the ball by defending a low total against defending Regional Women's Super50 champions Jamaica to kick off their Group B campaign with a win.

After being asked to bat first in a rain-affected match which was reduced to 26 overs-a-side, Guyana made 90/5 in their allotted overs. Katana Mentore tried to resist for the Guyanese with a patient knock of 30 from 69 balls, but once she went, Guyana couldn't kick on. Nelanie Henry also struck a patient 18 from 42 balls.

Jamaica in response lost wickets consistently in their run chase. At one point, they were three wickets down for six runs. However, Chedian Nation gave the Jamaicans hope with a fighting 30. Captain Stafanie Taylor also resisted for a short while, scoring 20.

However, Guyana kept taking wickets at crucial moments and pulled off a narrow three-run victory with over two overs to go in the match.

GROUP B ST LUCIA v ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES AT BOTANICAL GARDENS: St Vincent and the Grenadines saw off St Lucia by six wickets to start their Regional Women's Super50 campaign on a positive note.

Captain Julian Nero seemed to make the right decision when she won the toss and elected to field first. SVG sent St Lucia crashing all out for just 58 runs in 22 overs. Stacy Adams finished with 4-18, while Latoya Providence took 3-18. Roylin Cooper (17) and Gemma Bridgette (12) top scored for the St Lucians.

SVG stumbled in their early parts of their run chase, being reduced to 17/2 after seven overs. However, Samantha Lynch held the innings together. The opening bat scored 35 from 41 deliveries. She was the highlight of the run chase.

Nicole St. Prix grabbed 2-16 while Yasmine St. Ange and Teaddie Crawford had a wicket each but ultimately St Lucia did not have enough runs on the board. SVG got to 59/4 in 18.3 overs, winning by 6 wickets.
