Limited success for WI before rain
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – West Indies again failed to make inroads into Australia’s lower order, meeting stiff resistance from Mike Hussey and James Pattinson before lunch in the second Digicel Test on Monday.
The Windies were unable to build on Kemar Roach’s early breakthrough, as Pattinson, not out on 21, joined Hussey, not out on 54, to carry the Australians to 267 for six in their first innings, when rain brought lunch 10 minutes earlier than scheduled on the second day at the Queen’s Park Oval.
Roach struck in the second over of the day, when he had Matthew Wade caught at first slip for 11, playing defensively forward.
But West Indies met a roadblock, as Pattinson and Hussey added 59 – unbroken – for the seventh wicket either side of a 16-minute stoppage for rain to beef-up Australia’s total.
A drive through cover off West Indies captain Darren Sammy for a deuce brought Hussey to his 50 from 137 balls in just under 2 ¾ hours, but he was fortunate on 47.
Wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jr muffed a stumping chance, when the Australian left-hander charged down the pitch to a delivery from Shillingford and was bamboozled playing defensively forward.
The hosts trail 0-1 in the three-match series, following a three-wicket defeat in the first Digicel Test, which ended last Wednesday at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
West Indies are seeking their first Test win over the Aussies in nine years, and first series victory in close to two decades.
