Leicestershire to tour Barbados
Leicestershire has become the sixth English County team to opt for a pre-season tour of Barbados.
And in related news, recently discarded West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan, their new overseas signing, will link up with the team for the first time while in Barbados next month.
While in the Caribbean, Leicestershire will play a two-day game against Derbyshire starting on March 19, and a 40-over match against Warwickshire starting on March 22.
The Friends Life T20 champions will then compete in the 20-over Barbados Cup, starting with a quarter-final match against the Combined Campuses & Colleges on March 24.
The result will dictate whether they feature in the main competition or plate the following day.
“The key thing for us is outdoor practice, which is what we need with our season starting in early April. It will be a good combination of a two-day game, a 40-over game and T20 games, so it is covering all fronts,” said head coach, Phil Whitticase.
Echoing his sentiments was Warwickshire’s bowling coach, Graeme Welch, defending champions of the Barbados Cup.
“The one thing I was worried about [last year] was the timekeeping and things like that because the ‘Barbados way’ is quite laid-back,” Welch said.
“But everything went very smoothly and it was a great trip last year. There were five or six teams out there, as there will be again this time, and that allowed for some quality cricket and great practice out in the middle.
“It will be good preparation for us because the batters will get some time at the crease and the bowlers will have to work hard for their wickets.”
