Javier Liburd to lead Leewards in WICB Super50
Bridgetown, Barbados, CMC – Batsman Javia Liburd will lead the Leeward Islands as they launch their defence of the West Indies Cricket Board’s Regional Super50 title in Guyana starting next week.
The 24-year-old was named to lead the 14-man squad, following the conclusion of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association NAGICO limited overs tournament in St Kitts on Sunday.
Liburd is relatively inexperienced, having played just six first class matches and nine one-day matches for the Leewards. He has been a regular member of the Leewards set-up for the last four years, although he has not done anything spectacular.
He replaces veteran all-rounder Wilden Cornwall who led the side for last year’s championship and Steve Liburd who was in charge for the four-day tournament this year.
Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Jason Campbell from Nevis and batsman Jaison Peters of Montserrat are the only new faces in the squad for the October 19 to 30 championship.
There is also a recall after three years for left-handed opener Austin Richards Jr, and Mali Richards, the son of West Indies legend Sir Vivian Richards, has also made an entry in the picture, after playing for the Leewards in the regional first-class competition earlier this year.
The rest of the squad is fairly predictable and on paper at least, the Leewards seem to have a team worthy of putting up a decent challenge.
Steve Liburd has been retained in the squad, with Derbyshire county pro Chesney Hughes included along with out-of-favour West Indies seamer Lionel Baker.
Leewards will do battle in Group B of the Super50 along with Caribbean Twenty20 champions Trinidad & Tobago, regional first-class champions Jamaica, and the Combined Campuses & Colleges.
SQUAD: Javia Liburd (captain), Jaison Peters, Steve Liburd, Chesney Hughes, Montcin Hodge, Jacques Taylor, Lionel Baker, Jahmar Hamilton, Justin Athanaze, Orlando Peters, Mali Richards, Austin Richards Jr, Gavin Tonge, Jason Campbell.
