Jamaica, T&T score big wins in Round 1
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Jamaica launched the defense of their title by crushing Barbados while Trinidad and Tobago humbled ICC Americas, in the opening round of the Regional Under-19 One-Day Championship here Monday.
Playing at Bourda, Jamaica used a telling bowling performance to beat the Barbadians by eight wickets, in a lopsided contest.
Opting to bat first, Barbados crumbled to 97 all out off 36.4 overs with Jonathan Drakes, batting at number four, finishing on 33 not out.
Seamer Odean Smith was the best bowler with four for 27.
In reply, Jamaica lost Odaine McCatty lbw without scoring with just three on the board as the opener played across one from Tarik Shorey.
However, Mark Parchment came to the wicket to stroke the top score of 45 not out and anchor two partnerships, to see Jamaica home.
He put on 49 with opener Leroy Lugg who got 31 before adding a further 48 with Shahid Crooks, who finished on 12 not out.
At the Demerara Cricket Club, opener Amir Jangoo sustained his form from the three-day competition by striking 95 as T&T brushed aside ICC Americas by 164 runs.
Sent in, T&T rattled up 254 all out off 48.3 with Jangoo striking seven fours and four sixes in a knock lasting 117 balls, to prove the mainstay of the innings.
When T&T slipped to 17 for two early on, Jangoo combined in a 60-run, third wicket partnership with Camillo Carimbocas who made 23, and then added a further 86 for the fourth wicket with Brian Christmas who made 30, to revive the innings.
Jangoo also put on 48 for the fifth wicket with Jemeel Maniram, who made 43, before miscuing a pull off spinner Farhan Malik (2-47), to be fifth out at 211.
