ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Former Antigua and West Indies wicketkeeper/batsman Ridley Jacobs is beaming with confidence as Leeward Islands cricket team prepares to open its 2014 NAGICO Super50 campaign against Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) at Queen’s Park Oval on Saturday.

“I think we stand a very good chance and I would be disappointed if we didn’t win this tournament. I think that the players are very eager for success and I think that now is the time for us to show it; but the point is that we need to win games and if you are not winning, then you do not deserve to be there,” he said.

“I honestly believe that we have a good balance right now based on the performances of the guys in the camp and some of the experienced players mixed with the youth. I think we have a really good blend of players going into the tournament.”

Leeward Islands Cricket Association named a 14-man squad on Monday as they switch into high gear ahead of the one-day tournament.

Grilled specifically on the non-selection of young Antiguan all-rounder, Orlando “Baby” Peters who was listed as one of three reserved players and the selection of Sylvester “Bouncing” Joseph, Jacobs said the aim of the selectors was to end with a balanced squad.

“Orlando, throughout the whole tournament (camp), did not play to his ability and in the very last one-day game that we played, he did fairly OK. But based on the performances before, the selectors decided to go with players who had been performing throughout the whole (camp),” he said.

“I honestly believe that if you are selecting a team then you are going to need experienced players and you also need youth and I think that Sylvester Joseph would fit into that experienced position, and with a bit of understanding about this level of cricket we decided to go for him. Alzarri Joseph is still young and inexperienced and he needs a lot of work, but I think he is one for the future,” he added.

Eight Antiguans made the final cut: Vice Captain Devon “Booby” Thomas, Justin Athanaze, Rahkeem “Jimbo” Cornwall, Sylvester “Bouncing” Joseph, Anthony “I-Roots” Martin, Mali Richards, Hayden Walsh Jr and Gavin Tonge have all.

The other members of the team are Captain Kieran Powell, Lionel Baker, Quinton Boatswain, Jahmar Hamilton, Montcin Hodge and Kelbert Walters. The team will be managed by Leroy Percival.
