JA Super50 captain to be named today
Jamaica Star article.
Kingston, Jamaica - The national selection panel could as early as today make public the name of the player who will captain Jamaica's team at this month's NAGICO Super50 tournament in Trinidad and Tobago.
According to head coach Junior Bennett, the custom is for the captain to be announced prior to the naming of a national squad, and he expects no different this time around.
The national 14-member squad is expected to be announced tomorrow, the final day for submission of teams for the tournament.
"It is the norm for the captain to be announced in advance of the final squad, and I don't foresee this changing," said Bennett.
"Therefore, I expect that the captained will be announced before the naming of the squad Friday.
Tamar Lambert, Chris Gayle and David Bernard Jr are expected to be among the players vying for the position.
The 32-year-old Lambert, the regular Four-day captain, led the team to the semi-finals last season in the absence of Gayle, who was absent for the most part because of international and club commitments.
Gayle, who is currently recuperating from a groin injury led the team to title success two seasons ago in Guyana.
It was the first time Jamaica was winning the tournament since 2008.
