GEORGETOWN, GUYANA - Furniture and electrical appliance distributor COURTS (Guyana) Incorporated and Universal Sports yesterday became the latest sponsors to come on board for the highly anticipated Guyana’s Independence T20 Cup to be held at the famous Albion Sports Complex on Sunday.

At a simple presentation ceremony held at COURTS New Amsterdam Berbice branch, Branch Manager Stanley McKenzie said his company is seriously interested in the development of sport in Berbice and will try and work with all NGOs and other stakeholders to promote it.

He said he was aware of the success of the first edition of the Independence Cup and was anxious to come on board for such a high-profile tournament, showering praise for the manner in which preparations for the tournament are going so far.

He said that one of the main reasons he was pleased to be associated with the event is that all the proceeds will go towards charity and he is willing to work with the Berbice Cricket Board to promote cricket in schools.

Receiving the cheque for the event, Anil chairman Beharry said he was also delighted to get the sponsorship from the furniture giant and promised as soon as the Independence Cup is over, he will discuss the schools tournament with the executives of the BCB and send a proposal.

He added that lots of effort is put into the event and sponsors like COURTS will be fully satisfied with the mileage they will get, as the event will be conducted in the most professional and transparent manner, with fans enjoying a clean form of entertainment.

Managing Director of Universal Sports Andrew Budhan said he read about the tournament while in Miami, Florida and as soon as he returned home, decided to get on board as a sponsor, since he loves the gentleman’s game.

“I have friends who play this game, including Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Christopher Barnwell and Richard Ramdeen, just to mention a few so when I read about the tournament, I was more than happy to get on board as a sponsor, since I love the game of cricket,” said Budhan.

Secretary of the BCB Angela Haniff, who received the sponsorship cheque on behalf of the organisers, thanked Budhan for his generosity, saying that businesses such as Universal Sports are the ones who make the tournament and other tournaments in Berbice and Guyana, a success.

Budhan’s sponsorship will see special incentives being awarded to the Youngest Player in the Tournament, Best Batsman, Best Bowler and Most Valuable Player of the Final, while a special financial donation was made to help offset expenses for the tournament.

The draw was done and will see Universal DVD Berbice Titans playing Karibee Rice Tigers in the first game from 10:00hrs, followed by the BK International East Coast Jaguars versus Georgetown Lions from 13:30hrs, with the winners meeting in the final under lights from 18:30hrs.
