West Indies bat well, but lose close encounter

POTCHEFSTROOM -- West Indies suffered a narrow defeat in their first warm-up match against Cape Cobra on Saturday at the Markötter Stadium, Klerkdrop in the North West province.

The West Indies won the toss and rattled up 327- off their 50 overs. The Cobras lost early wickets but stayed in the chase on a perfect batting pitch and ended on 329-7 off 49.4 overs, to win by three wickets with just two balls left.

West Indies to hit the field against provincial sides

POTCHEFSTROOM, South Africa -- The West Indies team will have two warm-up matches in the North West province as they prepare for the International Cricket Council’s Champions Trophy 2009 here in South Africa.

The first game will be on Saturday against provincial side Cape Cobras at the Markötter Stadium in Klerksdorp. The second match will be on Monday against North West Dragons in the suburb of Witrand. First ball in both matches is 10 am (4 am Eastern Caribbean Time/3 am Jamaica Time).

West Indies put in hard work on opening day

POTCHESFSTROOM, South Africa -- The West Indies players got down to the hard work at hand as they had an intense first day at their preparation camp in South Africa.

The team arrived on Monday, and on Tuesday morning they went directly to the excellent facilities at Senwes Park in Potchesfstroom for a morning net session followed by fielding drills in the afternoon and gym work in the evening. The team will have a similar programme on Wednesday.

Springer named as Assistant Coach for Champions Trophy 2009

JOHANNESBURG -- Henderson Springer has been named as Assistant Coach of the West Indies Team for the ICC Champions Trophy to be played in South Africa later this month.

Springer, a former Barbados allrounder, previously worked as Coach of the West Indies “A” Team in 2006 and Assistant Coach of the West Indies Team in 2007. He presently holds the position of Director of Coaching at the Barbados Cricket Association.
