Guyana rout WIsld in Super50 opener
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Hosts Guyana began their quest for their first regional limited overs title in six years in devastating fashion, when they crushed hapless Windward Islands by 103 runs here Wednesday.
Playing at the National Stadium at Providence on the opening day of the Super50 Series, Guyana were dismissed for 192 after being sent in but then routed the Windwards for 72, after the visitors were set a revised target of 175 off 40 overs following rain during the interval.
No batsman reached 20 with Hyron Shallow (17), Denis George (14) and Nelon Pascal (12 not out) the only three players to make it to double figures.
They were undermined by off-spinner Steven Jacobs who snared four for 21 while pacer Paul Wintz, one of three debutants at this level, captured three for 15.
Earlier, West Indies fast bowler Nelon Pascal and left-arm spinner Gary Mathurin had destroyed Guyana’s innings after play got underway half-hour late because of a rain-impaired outfield.
Pascal picked up four for 38 from nine overs while Mathurin finished with three for 38 from 12 overs.
Skipper Assad Fudadin struck three fours to lead the way with a run-a-ball 45, while West Indies Twenty20 all-rounder Christopher Barnwell cracked 38 with two fours and a six.
Discarded West Indies opener Travis Dowlin offered support with 31 from 37 balls, striking a four and a six.
When the Windwards began their reply, they were rocked by Wintz and Jacobs, the latter who bowled unchanged, leaving the visitors precariously placed on 29 for six at one stage.
Jacobs claimed the prized wicket of skipper Devon Smith before the West Indies batsman had scored and also accounted for the dangerous Andre Fletcher for two.
Shallow, George and Pascal brought some respectability to their team’s total, but when Jonathan Foo dived to his right to save a certain four from Pascal, retrieved the ball and hit the stumps at the non-strikers end in one motion, George was found short of his crease to spark Guyanese celebrations.
