Gayle's double ton propels Kensingston to big win
Jamaica Observer article.
KINGSTON, JAMAICA - Schoolboy Delbert Gayle struck an unbeaten double century on Saturday to lead Kensington CC to a mammoth 187-run win over Kingston & St Andrew CA in the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) 50-over match at Kensington Park.
Gayle blasted 23 boundaries and five sixes off 172 balls during his 201 not out that piloted the home team to a formidable 333-5, and the teenager also gave hints of his all-round prowess in capturing 2-12 to help restrict Kingston & St Andrew for 146-9.
Scores: Kensington CC 333-5 (50 overs); Kingston & St Andrew CA 146-9 (33.4 overs).
Veteran top order batsman Maurice Kepple supported Gayle with 52, while Kedar Brown was the top bowler for Kingston & St Andrew with 2-61.
In reply, the visitors' lone resistance came from Naipal Johnson, who contributed 55. Lanky wrist-spinner Cassius Burton, formerly of St Elizabeth, was Kensington's top bowler with 4-29.
At Up Park Camp, Melbourne CC also had a commanding victory by 147 runs over the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) in a surprisingly lopsided encounter.
Scores: Melbourne CC 230-9 (45 overs); Jamaica Defence Force 83 (29.2 overs).
Batting first, Melbourne made a challenging 230-9, thanks to wicketkeeper/batsman Carlton Baugh's undefeated 79, and Tareque White's 60.
The aggressive Baugh struck eight fours and a quartet of sixes off only 71 deliveries, while strongly built White was more circumspect in hitting six boundaries and two sixes off 93 balls.
Spinners Akbar Moodie and Rashid Outar were the JDF's leading bowlers with 3-18 and 3-24, respectively. The usually dangerous left-arm wrist-spinner Dennis Bulli went wicketless in his five overs, which went for 31 runs.
In response, the soldiers could muster only 83, as leg-spinner Damian Jacobs grabbed 5-30, and Christopher Lamont chipped in with 3-9.
Bulli top-scored for JDF with 24.
At the Goodyear Oval, rain prevented a ball from being bowled in the scheduled encounter between St Catherine CC and hosts St Thomas CA.
