Kingston, Jamaica - St Catherine Cricket Club (CC) technical director, Ephraim McLeod, is happy with the turnout of support for the fundraiser in honour of former national Under-17 player Lasana Turner, who requires eye surgery.
The game, which was held at Chedwin Park last Sunday, saw a number of current and former West Indies and Jamaica players showing up, including Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Bevan Brown, Delroy Morgan, Wayne Lewis and Ordelmo Peters.
The event also saw St Catherine CC raising funds through donations and pledges, with Gayle and the national Cricket Clubs Activities Committee (CCAC) leading the way.
The CCAC donated $50,000, while Gayle gave $30,000. Also making contributions to the effort were Melbourne CC, which contributed $10,000, while Reggae Jammin, which sold food items at the venue, is expected to hand over proceeds from the sale at a later date.
"It was very good as I thought we achieved the goals that we set out to achieve in terms of participation and fundraising," said McLeod.
"We are now awaiting the final calculations, and if there is a shortfall, we will have to find a way how to get the figure that is needed."
McLeod explained that the club was trying to raise enough money to cover the surgery, which is expected to cost approximately $200,000.
Turner represented the country last year during the West Indies Under-17 championship in Trinidad and Tobago.
