Fletcher sees off St Lucia in opener

ST GEORGE’S, Grenada –  Home team Grenada defeated St Lucia by seven runs in their opening match of the Windward Islands T20 Festival at the Grenada National Stadium on Thursday.

Andre Fletcher smashed a quickfire half-century to ensure Grenada posted a competitive 154-4 from their 20 overs after St Lucia won the toss and decided to field.

Grenadian pacer Nelon Pascal then bagged 3-39 as the St. Lucians reached 147-7 in their 20 overs.

Opening batsman Fletcher led the run charge hitting three fours and the same numbers of sixes in a top score of 54, produced in just 34 balls.

Roland Ettienne provided some entertainment from the middle of the innings as well scoring three sixes and two boundaries in 39 from 25 balls.

Gary Mathurin, Xavier Gabriel, Dalton Polius, and Taryck Gabriel each picked up a wicket.

St Lucia lost early wickets trying to contend with a fiery Pascal who removed two frontline batsmen – Mervin Wells and Taryck Gabriel both caught for 15 and 12.

The visitors stumbled to 52-4 before middle order batsman Craig Emmanuel spearheaded a recovery with a half century that pulled them back into the game.

Emanuel gave the St Lucians hope hitting a four and three sixes and was not out on 53 from 47 balls while Alex Antoine scored a fighting 34 from 17 balls before he was caught towards the end of the innings.

The other successful Grenadian bowlers were Micah Narine, Eamon Alexander, Denis George and Denroy Charles who each picked up a wicket.
