SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — The competition on the field was less than riveting.

However, the thousands who turned up had great fun as Junction/Bull Savannah crushed Richmond Park by nine wickets in the championship match of the 2013 Social Development Commission (SDC) Twenty20 (T20) competition played at Alpart Sports Club in Nain, St Elizabeth.

The victory gave Junction/Bull Savannah the top cash prize of $1 million as well as the trophy. The Kingston-based Richmond Park received $500,000.

Ironically, Junction/Bull Savannah, representing St Elizabeth, only reached the last four after two teams were disqualified at the quarter-final stage.

After winning the toss, Richmond Park, first-timers to the competition, were restricted to 129-6 off their allotted 20 overs in good, sunny conditions on a fair pitch with even bounce.

Opener John Ross-Campbell hit 34 runs off 30 balls, including three fours and a six, while number six batsman Malcolm Bryan struck two sixes and a boundary for 34 off 22 deliveries for the team from Kingston and St Andrew.

Brian Gayle, bowling off-spinners, took 2-14, while Christopher Dyer and Troy Powell grabbed one wicket each to complement a spirited Junction/Bull Savannah fielding effort. Junction/Bull Savannah then cruised to 130-1 in the 17th over.

Opening batsman Kerry Holness top scored with an attacking 27-ball 45, laced with three sixes and as many fours for Junction/Bull Savannah.

Fellow opener Damion Ebanks and number three batsman Brian Gayle chipped in with unbeaten knocks of 44 and 29, respectively, to secure the victory with 20 balls remaining.

Marlon Saunders took 1-27 for Richmond Park .

In the third-place match, Petersville of Westmoreland beat Jack's River of St Mary by seven wickets. They secured cash prizes of $250,000 and $125,000, respectively.

Old Harbour won the previous two editions of the tournament.
