Estwick wants consistency and patience

Georgetown, Guyana - Head Coach of the West Indies Under-19 team, Barbados’ Roddy Estwick yesterday told Chronicle Sport he is looking for consistency, discipline and patience from his charges, who will be engaging a Bangladesh Under-19 squad in a seven-match series here in Guyana next month.

Taking time out from his team’s practice session in brilliant sunshine at the once famous Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground, the former Barbados fast bowler says the squad was the best you could have gotten, coming out of the last youth tournament in St Kitts.

“Obviously, it is the best squad you could have picked from the last Under-19 tournament, so we are now trying to fine-tune, get them to understand and try to make not too big a change, but one and two technical changes as well, making this a camp that will be worthwhile,” said Estwick.

The burly Estwick, who played 37 First Class matches during his playing days which spanned 1982-83 to 1986-87, where he took 141 wickets at an average of 21.90 with a best of 6 for 68 taken against the Leeward Islands in the 1983-1984 WICB season, expressed his pleasure at having six fast bowlers in the lineup.

“The response from the players is wonderful. I am really happy with what I am seeing from the players in the camp so far, even though it is early days,” said Estwick.

He added, “You are seeing six exciting fast bowlers and young Motie as a spinner, so you are seeing talent and I am sure that once the batsmen get accustomed to the pitches in Guyana, they will get better as time goes by.”

Quizzed on his thoughts of the opposition whom he will be facing in three day/night encounters at the Guyana National Stadium, with the other four being played at Everest Cricket Club, Albion Community Centre and GCC, Estwick readily admitted that Bangladesh are an unknown lineup.

“I don’t know anything about the opposition, so I don’t concentrate on the opposition too much. Hopefully when they play against Guyana, we can get some footage and we can come up with a plan.

Right now we are trying to get our team to gel, try and get them to be as consistent and disciplined as possible and to be patient as well, since they are all important ingredients for a successful career in any sport.”

West Indies Under-19 Training Squad reads: Fabian Allen, Tristan Coleman, Brandon King, Ramaal Lewis, Leroy Lug and Marquino Mindley (Jamaica), Jofra Archer and Jerome Jones (Barbados), Bryan Charles and Jeremy Solanzo (Trinidad and Tobago), Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai and Shimron Hetmyer (Guyana), Taryck Gabriel, Ray Jordan and Preston McSween (Windward Islands) and Alzarri Joseph (Leeward Islands.

Trinidad and Tobago’s wicketkeeper/batsman Nicholas Pooran was not considered for selection as he will be with the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force team participating in the Champions League. Should he become available following the Champions League he will join the West Indies Under-19 squad
