Essequibo routed for 17
GEORGETOWN, GUYANA - Essequibo suffered humiliation at the hands of defending champions GT&T Berbice in their first round Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) NEW GPC Inc-sponsored Inter-County two-day Under-15 tournament at the Enmore Community Centre ground on Monday.
Set a winning target of 198 off 51 overs, the Cinderella County team were bowled out for 17 in just 13.3 overs to suffer a humiliating defeat by 181 runs. Medium pacer Sylus Tynoall (5-4) and left arm spinner Joel Seetaram (3-0) shared eight wickets between them in eight overs.
Eight of the Essequibo batters made duck as the Berbicians exposed the fragility of the Essequibo batting at all levels. Joshua Jones top scored with nine.
Rameshwar Somwaru and Joshua Harrichand also claimed a wicket each for GT&T Berbice.
GT&T Berbice with a first innings lead of 25 runs, declared their second innings at 172 for 4 off 49 overs. Opener Adrian Suloway topscored with 59 (4×6). He received support from Matthew Hardial, 36, and Joshua Harrichand, 31 not out.
Bowling for Essequibo, Christopher Latchman finished with 3-57 and Besham Moses 1-38.
Over at the Everest Cricket Club ground, Demerara and President’s XI played to an exciting draw.
Chasing a huge target of 262 for victory, the President XI reached 141 for 9 in 89 overs when play was ended at the 17:00h scheduled time.
Andrew Clifford (28) and Richie Lucknauth (34) provided some resistance with a cautious fifth wicket stand of 51 runs after they were reduced to 38 for 4 at one stage.
Earlier, Demerara, resuming on 43 for 1, batted for a further 73 minutes in the first session before declaring on 123 for 4 with an overall lead of 261.
Overnight batsmen Bhaskar Yadram and Timothy McAlmont took their score of 28 and nine to 53 and 14 respectively before the latter was dismissed by Andrew Clifford.
Clifford then removed both Yadram and Jaddel Mc Allister (7) in quick succession that brought the deceleration 40 minutes before the lunch interval. Yadram’s innings lasted for 36 balls and included 10 fours.
Clifford finished with figures of 3 for 21 while Richie Lucknauth claimed the other wicket for the President’s XI.
President’s XI were reduced to 26 for 3 when lunch was taken. Medium pacer Kelvin Shewprasad did the early damage with the wickets of Darshan Persaud (1), Zameer Inshan (0) and Kheshram Seyhodan (0).
Upon resumption, the President’s XI lost Raymong Perez (15) but Clifford and Lucknauth then took the total to 89 before both batsmen were removed in quick succession.
The next four President’s XI wickets managed to score 49 runs between them before the last pair of Vickram Talmakund (23 not out) and Junior Phillips (yet to get off the mark) held their nerves to ensure their team secure the draw.
For Demerara, Shewprasad finished with 3 for 19, Yadram 2 for 14, Nedd 2 for 36 while Hetheramani and Campbell had 1 for 24 and 1-0 respectively. Demerara’s captain Bhaskar Yadram was adjudged Man-of-the Match for his first innings unbeaten 99 and his second innings 53.
The competition continues on Wednesday with round two. President’s XI will play Berbice at GCC while Essequibo will oppose Demerara at Wales Community Centre ground.
