Dwayne Alleyne, Nathaniel, Parris among stars as Foundation 'B', C-P win in Joel Garner T20
Barbados Cricket Association article.
Bridgetown, Barbados - There were sharply contrasting wins for Foundation 'B' Old Scholars and Coleridge & Parry Old Scholars in the Christ Church Foundation School Joel Garner Twenty20 tapeball tournament at Dover on Friday night.
In one of the most amazing fightbacks ever in the six-year history of the competition, Dwayne Alleyne won the hearts of another big crowd as he overcame the recent passing of his mother to produce a telling all-round performance which fired Foundation 'B' Old Scholars to a 26-run win over Lodge Old Scholars, while Coleridge & Parry Old Scholars brushed fellow former champions Deighton Griffith Old Scholars by 73 runs.
Playing in the Barry Gaskin/Bran Williams Zone 'D', Foundation 'B' twice rose from dire straits to stun Lodge and their sizeable supporters including former student and Barbados Labour Party Member of Parliament for St. George South, Dwight Sutherland, who in a brief, live interview praised what the tournament was offering.
After winning the toss, Foundation 'B' were reeling on 28 for five off 5.4 overs before Alleyne and Rasheed Edwin added 96 in 11 overs for the sixth wicket in a total of 142 for seven off 20 overs.
The 26-year-old Alleyne, whose mother Denise Alleyne died at the age of 53 on January 10 and was buried two weeks later following a battle with cancer, topscored with 62 off 48 balls including seven fours and three sixes, while Edwin made 20.
Pacer Kevin Howard, who took the first four wickets, ended with four for 21 off four overs.
Lodge were well on course for victory when they reached 105 for two after 14 overs. But the wicket of left-hander Chad Puckerin, who topscored with 39 off 32 balls and was one of five scalps for off-spinner Amahl Nathaniel, led to an unbelievable collapse.
The last eight wickets fell like ninepins for just 11 runs in four overs as Lodge were bowled out for 116 in 18.1 overs.
Nathaniel, who also removed Renaldo Holder (27) in a second wicket stand of 62 in 8.3 overs with Puckerin, finished with five for 13 off 3.1 overs, while Alleyne took three for 31 off four overs.
Alleyne, whose twin brother Darren also played for Foundation 'B' in the game, was named the Baron's Smokehouse Player-of-the-match. On receiving his $100 award at the presentation ceremony after a minute's silence was observed, Dwayne Alleyne dedicated his memorable performance to his mother.
Both Alleynes play in the BCA Intermediate division competition for Central of which Dwayne Alleyne is the captain.
Later in the Irvine King/Hugh Barker Zone 'C', Coleridge & Parry, the 2011 champions and studded with players who are well known at the highest level of local domestic competitions, recovered from losing skipper Pedro Agard and Shane Parris without a run on the board to total 142 off 20 overs after losing the toss.
The Baron's Smokehouse Player-of-the-Match Renaldo Parris led the way with 43 off 32 balls containing three fours and two sixes. He and Dario Cummins (36) put on 61 in 8.4 overs for the fifth wicket.
Fast bowler Marlon Franklyn grabbed four for 22, while skipper and medium-pacer Martin Nurse picked up two for 36 - both off four overs.
Deighton Griffith, who captured the title two years ago, lost wickets steadily and were bowled out for 69 in just 11.5 overs with Nikolai Charles scoring 21 not out.
Seamer Roshon Primus took four for 31 off four overs, off-spinner Shane Ramsay, three for nine off two overs and medium-pacer Adrian Caddle, two for 20 off four overs.
The tournament goes into the second round on Monday, February 3 at Briar Hall with Princess Margaret Old Scholars opposing Alleyne Alumni at 7 p.m. as both teams seek their first win in the Lee Harford Skeete/Lewiston Wellington Zone 'A'.
