Could Leon Johnson join illustrious company

Kaieteur News article.

Georgetown, Guyana - Statistician Charwayne Walker as usual provides thought provoking questions and today he enquires about Leon Johnson, who is due to tour with the West Indies ‘A’ Team shortly.

When the GCC Flambouyant left hander Leon L. J. Johnson arrives in India with the West Indies (A) team the only word on his mind will be (consistency).  The former West Indies under-19 Captain is on a Mission.  Johnson will join several compatriots who toured with the West Indies (A) or (B) team but failed to win a test Cap.

The former St. Rose’s standout was not born when Club mate Timur Mohamed toured Zimbabwe with the West Indies (B) team in 1981.  Strange enough that was the first (A) or (B) team tour.

Johnson, who is the only Guyanese with a double century at the Regional under-19 level, is cognisant of his fellow Guyanese who toured with the West Indies (A) or (B) teams but failed to gain a Test Cap.

The Guyanese who toured for WI second string teams are:

Timur Mohamed GCC West Indies (B) to Zimbabwe 1981

Timur Mohamed GCC West Indies (B) to Zimbabwe 1983

Deryck Kallicharran Everest West Indies (B) to Zimbabwe to Zimbabwe 1983

Leslain Lambert GDF West Indies (B) to Zimbabwe 1983

Andrew Lyght DCC (deceased) West Indies (B) to Zimbabwe 1983

Andrew Jackman GCC West Indies (B) to Zimbabwe 1986

Sudesh Dhaniram Port Mourant West Indies (B) to Zimbabwe 1989

Lynden Joseph DCC West Indies (B) to Zimbabwe 1989

Andre Percival Port Mourant West Indies (A) to Canada 1994

Keith Semple DCC West Indies A to India and Bangladesh 1998

Leon Johnson GCC West Indies (A) to India 2013

So the million dollar question being asked by cricket fans is whether L.J will remain on the list mentioned above or will he become St. Rose’s first test cricketer, only time will tell.  The last time the West Indies (A) toured India was 1998 and GCC was represented by Ramnaresh Sarwan, Neil McGarrell and Reon King and all three went on to play Test Cricket after that tour.
