Cooper’s cameo fails to stop Sunrisers
HYDERABAD, India – Trinidadian Kevon Cooper’s small cameo failed to save Rajasthan Royals as Darren Sammy’s Hyderabad Sunrisers moved into playoff contention in the Indian Premier League with a 23-run victory here Friday.
The unassuming Cooper smashed 26 from 12 balls as the Royals, chasing 137 for victory, finished on 113 for nine off their 20 overs.
Playing at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the hosts stumbled to 136 for nine after winning the toss and opting to bat, with Biplab Samantray top scoring with 55.
Sammy hit 23 from 19 balls with one four and a six in adding 56 for the fifth wicket with Samantray, as they dragged Sunrisers around from 49 for four in the 11th over.
The West Indies Test and Twenty20 captain eventually fell in the 17th over, failing to clear long-off with Australia seamer James Faulkner.
Cooper finished with nine for 39 from his overs.
In reply, the Royals were 39 without loss before crashing to 85 for eight in the 18th over.
Cooper arrived to smash three fours and a six – including two successive boundaries in the final over bowled by South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn – before holing out to deep point.
Sunrisers occupy the fourth and final playoff spot on 18 points, two ahead of Chris Gayle’s Royal Challengers Bangalore who play their final preliminary game against Dwayne Bravo’s Chennaai Super Kings on Saturday.
Sunrisers play their last game on Sunday against defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders who feature West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine.
