Combermere ‘hog up’ play on Day 3 of U-15 final

Barbados Advocate article.

Bridgetown, Barbados - There was no mercy shown nor quarter given when Nicholls Baking Combermere strode to their second straight victory in the Barbados Cricket Association LIME Under-15 Cricket Competition.

After taking a rather lean first innings lead, the Waterford boys took the win after spending all of Day 2 and most of Day 3 at the crease.

After closing the day’s play on 173 for the loss of three on Thursday, Shakkae Marshall and Zidane Clarke came back out to see the former adding the team’s last big contribution. Marshall moved from the previous day’s eight up to 61 while Clarke barely got off the mark to make three.

The pace of play slowed right down with many of the middle and lower order batsmen going cheaply. Captain Najee Holder was the only other player on the day to make double figures for his team. By lunch, Combermere had amassed 256 for seven as they continued to draw out the game with many spectators grumbling about a declaration.

Alexandra’s captain Keemar Burrowes was the most effective with the ball and he took the scalps of Shian Brathwaite (73), Thaddeus Chase (37) and Clarke for 54 runs in his 25-over spell. Deshawn Topping also did well with the ball to take two wickets for 16, inclusive of Marshall’s.

It was only after showers halted play at 2:10 PM that Roddy Estwick’s boys called their hand at 266 for the loss of eight. With time against them, there was little the Speightstown boys could do to pull a victory out of the encounter. The opening pair of Jherard Morris-Sealy and Shacolby Corbin put in the best showing for the team with 25 and 21 respectively. Burrowes spent a bit of time at the crease but only came out of it with 15.

As the order fell quickly in the 34-over innings, Jaden Edmund (11) was the only other player to make it over seven runs. The bowling of Ranaldo Callender and Runeko Layne ensured this as the pair had good spells. Callender took three scalps for 39 runs in 17 overs while also took a trifecta of scalps for 20 runs in an eight-over stint. By the time the 5:00 PM close-of-play rolled around, Alexandra were on 91 for the loss of eight, giving Combermere the championship on first-innings honours.
