Collapse leaves Volcanoes facing defeat
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC — A shocking late evening collapse left Windward Islands Volcanoes on the verge of a heavy against Barbados Pride, heading into Sunday’s penultimate day of their seventh round clash.
Trailing by 31 runs after doing well to dismiss Pride for 324 in their first innings, Volcanoes then stumbled to the close at Kensington Oval on 34 for five — ahead by just three runs with their top order already wiped out.
Fast bowler Miguel Cummins, with three for 16, and part-time off-spinner Roston Chase with two for 16, combined to wreck the innings in just 14 overs.
Captain Kevin Stoute had earlier stroked a top score of 61 — his 11th first class half-century — as the hosts, resuming on their overnight 22 without loss, carved out a narrow first innings advantage.
Starting the day on eight, Stoute produced a breezy knock, stroking nine fours off 82 deliveries, while Shamarh Brooks made 42, Chase, 39 and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich, 38.
Left-handed Anthony Alleyne chipped in with 35 while tail-ender Jomel Warrican weighed in with an unbeaten 29.
Stoute put on 75 for the first wicket with Alleyne who struck seven boundaries in a up temp 47-ball knock, before putting on a further 39 for the second wicket with Omar Phillips who made 23.
Pride lost West Indies batsman Shai Hope (8) eight balls before lunch and then Stoute, nine balls following the resumption, as the innings declined to 129 for four.
However, Brooks struck seven fours in a 62-ball innings while Chase faced 71 balls and counted five fours, as they put on 79 for the fifth wicket to rally the innings.
When Pride slipped to 245 for six at tea, Dowrich added 43 for the seventh wicket with Ashley Nurse (22) and 31 for the eighth with Kemar Roach (4), to take their side into the lead.
Batting a second time, Volcanoes were in trouble when Tyrone Theophile edged Cummins to Nurse at second slip without scoring in the third over and Taryck Gabriel swung Chase to Brooks at square leg in the next over to fall for four.
Devon Smith (11) and Keddy Lesporis (2) perished in successive overs from Cummins and Sunil Ambris bungled a cut at Chase and was bowled for five.
