Chanderpaul, McSween give WI U19s win
PROVIDENCE, Guyana – Preston McSween followed up a half-century from Tagenarine Chanderpaul with a destructive spell to spur West Indies Under-19s to a 67-run victory over Bangladesh Under-19s in their fifth Youth One-day International on Wednesday here.
McSween grabbed 4-20 from 8.3 overs, as the Windies Under-19s successfully defended a target total of 178 to claim a morale-boosting victory under the lights at the Guyana National Stadium.
The left-arm fast-medium bowler formalised the victory, when he had batting bunny Jubair Hossain caught close to the wicket by his captain Ramaal Lewis with 69 deliveries remaining.
The result meant that the home team now trail 2-3 in the seven-match series, after they won the first match by six wickets at the same venue two Mondays ago and the Bangladeshis followed up three straights wins.
The penultimate match of the series will be contested on Saturday at the Albion Sports Complex located approximately 62 miles east of the Guyana capital of Georgetown.
Chanderpaul led the way with 51, as the West Indies Under-19s were dismissed for 177 in 46.2 overs, after their typical struggles against the visitors’ spin bowlers, whose Jubair Hossain grabbed 4-20 from 7.3 overs, Mossadek Hossain captured 2-19 from 10 overs and Rifat Pradhan took 2-27 from seven overs.
McSween and Jordan then snared two wickets apiece in their opening burst, leaving the Bangladesh Under-19s wobbling on 35 for four.
The Windies spin trio of Lewis, Gudakesh Motie and Taryck Gabriel bowled steadily and did not ease up the pressure, but opener Shadman Islam defied the attack to lead the way for the Bangladeshis with 49.
The hosts took wickets at regular intervals before McSween sparked celebrations when he brought the match to a close.
Earlier, West Indies Under-19s were set back almost immediately, when opener Leroy Lugg was caught behind off Rifat Pradhan for a duck.
Chanderpaul was the glue that held the top order together before he Mossadek removed him to leave the Windies Under-19s on 145 for five.
This triggered a slump, as Jubair ran through the lower order and the Caribbean side lost their last six wickets for 32.
