Carter demolishes Windward Islands

Bridgetown, Barbados - Jonathan Carter showed his versatility with career-best figures of five for 26 as Barbados demolished Windward Islands by 99 runs in the fifth round WICB Super50 Day/Night match at Kensington Oval here tonight to significantly step up their bid for a place in the semi-finals.

Better known as a left-hand batsman, the 25-year-old Carter wreaked havoc in smart right-arm medium-pace bowling of ten overs from the Malcolm Marshall end at the south as the Windwards, chasing 280 for victory, were bowled out 180 in 47 overs.

The win was Barbados' second for the season and as was the case against Guyana at the same venue in the the second round, earned them a bonus point, thus moving into third position on ten points from four matches.

Andre Fletcher topscored for the Windwards with 42 off 44 balls, striking six fours and one six.

It was the third defeat for the Windwards as they slipped to fifth place on eight points from five matches.

Carter's previous best figures at this level were two for 41.

Tall fast bowler Jason Holder picked up two for 38 off ten overs.

Earlier, Barbados recovered from a slow start to blast 279 for seven off 50 overs - the highest overall total for the season - after winning the toss in bright, sunny conditions.

At the halfway stage they were 92 for one.

Captain Kirk Edwards topscored with 64 off 93 balls, hitting four fours and one six.

All-rounder Dwayne Smith, in his last match for the regional season before leaving to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), slammed a hurricane 53 not out off 29 balls with three fours and four sixes.

Smith and Kenroy Williams, who scored 36 off 24 deliveries with five boundaries, beefed up the innings with a partnership of 77 for the seventh wicket in 6.1 overs.

Fast bowler Nelon Pascal was the leading wicket-taker with three for 87 off ten overs, while his new ball partner, left-arm pacer Johnson took two for 57, also off ten overs.
