Cariah leaves it late to stun Windwards
KINGSTOWN, ST VINCENT - Yannick Cariah took five wickets to leave the Windward Islands heart-broken at Arnos Vale in a thrilling come from behind victory for Trinidad and Tobago.
The Windwards seemed on course to do the double against the 'Trinis' at 184/3, chasing 217 runs to win their Round II, Super50 encounter.
However, another middle-order flop this time saw the Windwards crash to defeat. The opening pair of Devon Smith and Tyrone Theophile gave the hosts a solid start after restricting the T&T batsmen to 216/5.
Smith looked in his usual good form this season while Theophile ably assisted him. Both put on 54 for the opening stand. When Smith went, Andre Fletcher came in and took the attack to the bowlers. He looked quite comfortable on a batsman-friendly Arnos Vale pitch.
But quickly, Cariah and his captain Rayad Emrit struck twice in two balls. Cariah at the end of his sixth over, and Emrit at the start of his fourth. The Windwards were then shaking on 73/3.
But Liam Sebastien joined Andre Fletcher and both batted the home side to the brink of victory. They took the score to 181/3, before Fletcher tried clearing long-off and was caught.
T&T had used that wicket to start putting a cap on the scoring. The equation of runs to get from balls remaining were starting to getting closer. In fact, it got so close at one point, the Windward Islands started panicking, playing their shots.
In an almighty collapse, the home side fell from 181/3 to 202 all out. Cariah was the chief destroyer, finishing with 5/44. But it was really down to poor Windwards batting that saw their demise.
Ravi Rampaul, who didn't have a great game with the ball, came back with three overs to go, and with all of his experience, conceded just three runs from the last over, of which the Windwards needed 17.
Earlier, T&T's familiar batting woes continued. The opening partnership of Lendl Simmons and Adrian Barath again failed, rather Simmons. The latter started off aggressively, smashing three fours for a quick fire 20 from 25 balls. But his entertainment was short-lived, as he drove Delorn Johnson straight back, hard to the bowler, and Johnson took a very good reflex catch.
Barath too, didn't look confident. He chipped away to 29, playing the odd shot, but it's not the free flowing Barath we all know. He was trapped Leg Before by Liam Sebastien.
Evin Lewis batted well, though the short balls gave him a lot of trouble. He fought hard in tough conditions, or so the T&T batsmen made it look. On 31 though, as Shane Shillingford was introduced into the attack, he played on to a delivery to close to cut.
But it brought out Jason Mohammed, who started very slowly. T&T at 83/3 could ill-afford to lose another wicket. He battled his way through some good Windwards bowling, who had their tails up. Justin Guillen's form with the bat continues to be a major concern for T&T. He came and went, so too did Yannick Ottley.
But it was in young debutant, wicket-keepr Nicholas Pooran, coming in for Denesh Ramdin, no more than five feet tall that Mohammed would find the partner he was looking for. As the innings came to close, both took the attack to the Windwards' bowlers in an effort to push an average score to something competitive.
And indeed they did, with a little bit of luck, Mohammed and Pooran had put on an unbroken stand of 63 runs to take T&T from 154/5 to 216/5 at the close of their innings.
Mohammed finished unbeaten on 63 while Pooran was on 33. For all his efforts though, Mohammed was edged out for the Man of the Match award by Cariah, who broke the back of the Windwards' batting.
In the end, 216 was 14 runs too many for an imploded Windward Islands.
