Best hails Gibson for his help

Kingston, Jamaica — West Indies fast bowler Tino Best has praised Head Coach Ottis Gibson for his overall game improvement, and believes he is capable of cementing a place in the squad to take on New Zealand in the Digicel One-Day International series, which bowls off at Sabina Park on Thursday.

Best, who made his international debut back in 2003, had been out of the Windies line-up for several years. He is now back with the team and not only has his bowling skills improved, but also his batting.

He showcased his batting skills at Edgbaston in England last month, when he hit a brilliant 95 runs, which was the highest score by a Number 11 batsman in the history of Test cricket.

“Ten years ago, I never had a coach to tell me how to bowl to the best of my ability, highlighting the area of my bowling and how to do better, but Gibson is doing a great job as our coach,” said Best.

Best does not view himself as a conventional last man, but noted that he is willing to do what needs to be done in making a contribution with the bat and becoming a more mature cricketer.

“I don’t see myself as a Number 11, but someone who can make a contribution with a bat,” said the 30-year-old Best. “I also need to be more selective in the shots I attempt and in general be a more mature cricketer.”

Best is looking forward to improve his performance here in Jamaica as this is where he got his first Test wicket. He said the pitch has something special for fast bowlers, so he is looking forward to run in and quickly take wickets.

“The pitch here also has something for the faster bowlers, like myself, so I will look to run in and bowl as quickly as I can and get wickets for West Indies,” said Best.
