Bernard gives Jamaica fifth straight win

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – A career-bowling performance from Dave Bernard jolted Trinidad & Tobago and handed runaway leaders Jamaica an emphatic 192-run victory in the Regional 4-Day Tournament on Monday.

Bernard collected seven wickets for 23 runs from 10.3 overs, as T&T, chasing 305 for victory, folded meekly for 112 in their second innings on the final day of their fifth round match at Queen’s Park Oval.

All-rounder Bernard triggered a collapse that saw T&T lose their 10 wickets for 53, bringing the match to a close when he trapped Shannon Gabriel lbw for a duck about an hour after the regularly scheduled lunch interval.

The result meant that Jamaica, the four-time defending champions, gained 12 points, moving to a maximum 60, and T&T remained on 28 points, dropping to third place in the tournament.

Left-handed opener Justin Guillen struck four fours and one six in the top score of 40 from 54 balls, giving T&T a solid start in a first wicket stand of 59 with Imran Khan. But no other T&T batsmen reached 20.

When Guillen was lbw playing back to leg-spinner Odean Brown, this sparked a slide from which T&T never recovered, with left-arm spinner Nikita Miller having Khan stumped for 14, when he lured him out of his crease.

Marlon Barclay made 15 – the only other score over 10 – and seemed to be rebuilding the innings with Jason Mohammed, when Bernard transformed the complexion of the match with his burst.

Mohammed was lbw for nine playing across, Aneil Kanhai edged Bernard to first slip, and Miller trapped Barclay lbw, as T&T reached 85 for five at lunch.

This offered the hosts only temporary respite, as Bernard mowed down the bottom half of their batting.

The Jamaicans have drawn a bye in the next round, starting on Friday, when T&T host Guyana at the same venue.
