Barnwell XI register 43-run victory in second Demerara trial match

Georgetown, Guyana - Christopher Barnwell’s XI registered a 43-run victory over Steven Jacobs’ XI in the final Demerara trial match on Friday at the Georgetown Cricket Club, ground.
Two matches were organised to select the Demerara team to contest the upcoming Pepsi 50-over Inter-County tournament, scheduled from September 21-29.
Despite starting the game with the upper hand, after winning the first trial game the day before, Jacobs XI came up short in the end. Chasing a massive 320 for victory, they finished on 277 for 5.
Openers Shemroy Barrington and Robin Bacchus showed positive intent from the beginning with a partnership of 175 runs. Barrington smashed a topscore of 88 while Robin Bacchus hit 85.
Bowling for Barnwell’s XI, Trevon Griffith and Dexter George claimed two wickets apiece.
Earlier, after winning the toss and batting, Barnwell’s magnificent knock of 72 helped his side post a challenging 320 for 9 off their allotted 50 overs. His knock was decorated with two fours and seven maximums as he took apart the opposition’s bowling attack.
However, national opener Trevon Griffith and Andrew Lyght Jr had earlier laid the foundation with a 110-run opening partnership. Griffith made an aggressive 67, inclusive of five fours and three sixes while Lyght Jr hit 40. No other batsmen made any meaningful contribution.
Off-spinner Yatesh Dhanpaul was the best bowler, picking up 4 for 30 off seven overs.
Meanwhile, in the first trial game on Thursday, Steven Jacobs XI defeated Leon Johnson XI by four wickets.
Jacobs led from the front with 55, inclusive of three fours and two sixes as his team reached 131-6 in 31 overs, replying to the 130-9 made by Johnson’s XI. Jamal Hinckson and left-hander Arvin Seepersaud supported with 21 and 17 respectively. Skipper Leon Johnson captured 3-30 from six overs.
Earlier, when the game was reduced to 32 overs a side, Barrington topscored with 38. Vincent Forrester, 17, Jeetendra Sookdeo, 14, and Tagnarine Chanderpaul, 10, were the other principal scorers.
First-Class off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed took 2-22 from five overs and leg-spinner Amir Khan supported with 2-32 from six overs.
