40-Plus cricket team competes in St. Kitts

VIRGIN ISLANDS - The 40-Plus Rock City Masters Cricket Club of St. Thomas finished third in the Leeward Islands Masters Tournament from May 17 to 19 on St. Kitts.

In their first twenty20, Rock City beat defending champion Antigua. Rock City batted first and scored 122 for 8 in 20 overs, and Antigua was bowled out for 103 in 18 overs. The top batsman for Rock City was Livingston Harris, who scored 39 runs.

Rock City advanced to the semifinals when Nevis beat Antigua, giving Antigua its second loss. But in the semis, Rock City was defeated by St. Kitts, who went on to fall to Nevis in the championship match.

Along with their third-place finish, Rock City got the tournament's most improved team award. Also, Harris was named Best Wicketkeeper for the tournament out of a list of seven vying for the title.

The next Leeward Islands Masters Tournament is scheduled for next year in Nevis.

Rafael Jackson AA Baseball League

Sixto Piniero and Jesse D'Paula each went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in as they helped the Cobras defeat the Vikings, 12-9, in the Rafael Jackson AA Baseball League on Sunday on St. Croix.

Raymond SanKitts drove in two runs and Jack Daniel added another for the Cobras as they each tallied two hits. The Cobras totalled 12 hits in the game and committed five errors.

The Vikings also had five errors and tallied seven hits. Kadeem Joseph and Mark Franklin each had a hit, and Franklin drove in two runs.

Otoneil Perriers was the winning pitcher and Ajahni Dowdy took the loss.

In the second game of the day at D.C. Canegata Ballpark, the Hurricanes edged the Yankees, 11-9, with help from Javier Perez, who went 1-for-2 at the plate and drove in three runs.

D'Ondre Simmonds and Mackeel Rodgers each had two hits and an RBI for the Hurricanes, while winning pitcher Lakish Plante went 1-for-2. The team had nine hits and an error in the game.

The Yankees totalled 11 hits and an error. Carlos Morales went 2-for-4, followed by Antonio Cruz at 2-for-3 and Tony Peguero at 3-for-4. David Samuel was the losing pitcher.

On Saturday, the Yankees defeated the Vikings, 9-5, led by Javier Perez's three RBIs on 2-for-4 batting. Rodgers and Steve Simmonds Jr. each added two hits to the Yankees' eight on the day. The Yankees also had one error.

Arthur Canaii drove in two runs and Dowdy drove in another for the Vikings as they had four hits and four errors.

Dushane Browne was the winning pitcher, and Ian Lewis took the loss.

Friday saw the Hurricanes cruise past the Cobras, 13-6, in an error-filled matchup. The Hurricanes won despite committing four errors, while the Cobras had five.

Cruz had three RBIs off two hits, and Carlos Morales had two RBIs from his two hits. Peguero had three of the team's 13 hits in his four plate appearances.

SanKitts was the Cobras' top batter with three of the team's 10 hits in his five appearances.

Kai Schjang was the winning pitcher, and Roberto Camacho was the losing pitcher.

Mothers Against Guns 2-Mile Walk/Run

Michael Thompson finished in 11 minutes and 18 seconds to be the overall and top male finisher in the Mothers Against Guns 2-Mile Walk/Run this weekend on St. Thomas. Keshema Fleming was the top women's finisher in 14:32, and winners were awarded in nine different age categories.
