Port of Spain, Trinidad - Trinidad and Tobago’s Indian Premier League star Kieron Pollard will be one of the main attractions in the second Caribbean Single Wicket Cricket tournament which takes place at Sir Frank Worrell Ground at the University of St Augustine on Saturday.
Pollard and his Mumbai Indian teammate Lendl Simmons, along with defending champion Dwayne Smith, who plays with Chennai Super Kings, and last year’s runner up Christopher Barnwell, were all top seeds for this year’s competition, which will have a bumper first prize of US$7,000.
The final list of 12 all-rounders was announced at a media conference at the Normandie Hotel, St Ann’s, yesterday.
Pollard was drawn in Group III along with Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Kevon Cooper and Michael Brown, while Smith was drawn in Group II with Narsingh Deonarine and the “UWI Wild Card” player who will be selected by the University of the West Indies later this week. Last year’s “Wild Card” was Takeem Lowe from Jamaica.
Simmons was drawn in Group I with Marlon Richards and Devon Thomas while Barnwell will compete with Tobago’s Navin Stewart and T&T skipper Rayad Emrit in Group IV.
Director of the Single Wicket Cricket Foundation Andre Phillips noted that Stewart was the “giant killer” of the tournament after playing in the first exhibition tournament in Tobago in 2009 when he knocked out Dwayne Bravo. Stewart also knocked out Sunil Narine out of the competition in the group stage last year.
The tournament, which bowls off at 4 p.m. and is expected to conclude around 11 p.m., will see 12 players from seven Caribbean territories divided into four groups of three with the winners of each group moving into the semi-finals.
The matches will be a one-on-one contest between two players. Each player will bowl two overs against his opponent, with the individual scoring more runs winning the encounter. In addition to the cricket, there will be other attractions for fans, including live performances by guest artistes.
Tickets for the tournament cost $60 and are available at Lollabee Cellular outlets nationwide as well as at Ramsingh’s Sport World outlets.
