Jamaica are West Indies women's champions

25/08/08

CASTRIES, St. Lucia (CMC) – Jamaica climaxed a thrilling week for sport in their country as the new champions of the West Indies Women’s cricket.

The result was formalised, after rain and sloppy conditions at all of the venues forced an almost complete washout of the final round of matches on Saturday leaving their nearest rivals to rue their chances.

Jamaica topped the standings with 17 points, followed by dethroned champions Trinidad & Tobago on 14, Barbados on 13, hosts St. Lucia on 12, Guyana on 10, with St. Vincent & the Grenadines on nine, Grenada on four, and Dominica without a point the other participants.

Only 12 overs in the match between hosts St. Lucia and neighbours Barbados were possible on the last day of the competition.

Barbados, sent into bat, had reached 47 for two with Rasheeda Goring not out on 15 and Pamela Lavine not on eight at the crease.

Pamela Alfred had snared two wickets – including Danielle Small for 13 – in six overs that cost 27 runs to be the most successful St. Lucian bowler before the conditions forced an early end to the match.

Jamaica’s Stephanie Taylor carried away the Most Valuable Player award and the prize for the Most Runs. She scored 428 runs including two hundreds at an average of 142.66.

Fernell Charles of SVG won the award for the Most Wickets after she collected 13 scalps at 10.85 runs apiece.

Mariah David of St. Lucia held the most catches, and Trinidad & Tobago’s Merissa Aguilera had the most dismissals.

Two St. Lucians – the evergreen pair of Eugenia Gregg and Verena Felicien – were given long service awards by the organisers.
