An extremely gifted right-handed batsman Marlon Samuels shot to prominence when he was fast-tracked into the Test team at the age of 19 on the 2000-2001 tour of Australia. Since then, he has played 26 Tests and 100 One-Day Internationals, but an average of 29.48 and 30.01 respectively and single Test century and two ODI centuries, is not a true reflection of his talent.

He has been sidelined on a number of occasions, either through lack of fitness or form. He has also had a few run-ins with the authorities on disciplinary matters.

An ice-cool and elegant batsman, Samuels' shot-selection sometimes borders on nonchalance as he always appears confident of taking apart any bowling attack.

His flat off-spin bowling has come in very handy, especially in the limited
overs game.

Prior to his Test debut, Samuels was recognised as one of the players who stood out in the Windies Youth team that participated in the 2000 World Cup in Sri Lanka.

A member of the ICC Cricket World Cup team, Samuels was not included in the original Test squad for the tour of England in 2007 but was recalled after captain Ramnaresh Sarwan was forced out of the tour after damaging his shoulder in a fielding accident.

Samuels comes from a cricket playing family, being the younger brother of Robert Samuels.
