The Trinidad and Tobago women’s team will take centre stage on Sunday morning when the face the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) women’s team in a 20/20 match at Queen’s Park Oval. The two teams have played two matches in the goodwill series – on Friday night at the UWISPEC at the St Augustine Campus and on Saturday at the National Cricket Centre at Balmain – with the home side winning both. First ball on Sunday is 9 am 98 am Jamaica Time) and the match will be played ahead of the one-off Digicel T20 International between West Indies and Zimbabwe, which starts at 2 pm (1 pm Jamaica Time).
Merissa Aguilleira, the captain and wicket-keeper of the Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies teams, said it will be a breakthrough for her and team-mates as it will be her first match for many of them at the historic venue.
“This is great for myself and all the girls. We are really looking forward to this match. It is amazing to get the opportunity to play in the Oval as well, because this is our first match there. Every Trini dreams of playing in the Oval and words just can’t explain whet this means to us. We will go out and make the most of it,” she said on Saturday.
The Trinidad and Tobago squad boasts several players who have represented West Indies at the international level. These include Anisa Mohammed, Stacy-Ann King, Britney Cooper, Kirbyina Alexander, Amada Samaroo and Giatri Seetahal. Aguilleira is the most experienced having played 22 ODIs and nine T20 Internationals. She has been credited with the emergence of the Windies girls and played a key role when they beat world champions England in St Kitts last November.
“We have a strong team and everyone is really excited to go out and represent Trinidad and Tobago. The MCC have done a fantastic job by coming to help develop women’s cricket here in Trinidad and we really want to thank them. We have had a good series so for and we are really looking ahead to Sunday’s match,” Aguilleira added.
“In the Trinidad and Tobago team we have a number of very good allrounders and right now everyone is on top of their game so the fans can expect a great match. The players are also looking to get an opportunity to impress the West Indies selectors ahead of the ICC T20 World Championship to be played in St Kitts later this year, so this is another match to show what we’re made of.”
